In 1810, a female African slave called Saartje Baartman was exhibited on tour, caged and naked, in London and Paris. People who came to view this bizarre spectacle were invited to ogle at this strange vision of womankind - her protruding vaginal lips and rounded, exaggerated buttocks. Saartje was presented as proof of the beauty of European women, compared with Africans.

But although that was the official line, white men were having their secret doubts. Female slaves in America and the Caribbean, and African women in the European colonies were developing the strange habit of giving birth to light-skinned children, by the million.
