Her uncle, Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, leads a conservative wing of the Catholic Church who oppose both gay marriage and the relaxation of divorce laws. Magdalena is using her naked form to draw attention to what she claims are the Cardinal's hypocritical views on family values.

She says her uncle, who has made a name for himself as a defender of the 'Christian family', often speaks about the importance of family and states that the family is scared and must be respected.

But, she says, he did not come to her father funeral.

”When my father died, [Rouco] did not come to the funeral, didn't send flowers or tell my mother of his sorrow. He told us he had a meeting with Pope John Paul II, but it was not true.”
