China Battles Pornography All The Way

"The boom of pornographic content on the Internet has contaminated cyberspace and perverted China's young minds," Zhang Xinfeng, a deputy public security minister, was quoted as saying Thursday. Also Friday, police announced that two Web site operators were sentenced to four years in prison and a third got one year for distributing pornographic movies and other materials in separate cases last year. One of the Web sites had signed up 260,000 users when its operator was arrested last year. ![]() The communist government of China encourages Internet use for education and business but tries to block access to material considered obscene or subversive. Beijing police are even threatening jail and fines for people who transmit pornography via mobile phones after merchants were caught selling such movies on phone memory chips. Police made the announcement after arresting 19 mobile phone dealers who were selling memory chips holding up to 60 minutes of porn each. Sending pornographic video, photos or messages via mobile phone can land the user in detention for two weeks or result in a fine of up to $400 - but merchants who sell such content can face up to three years in jail.
