Jerry Falwell, Go To Hell! Jerry Fulwell, darling of the American Religious Right died yesterday, aged 73. Fulwell did more than perhaps any other person to bring hate-filled, rightwing religion into mainstream American politics, and carries a great deal of the responsibility for the religious lunatics currently infesting the White House. He formed the campaigning group, Moral Majority, in 1979, encouraging Christian fundamentalists to register and vote. This resulted in the election of Ronald Reagan's Republican administration in 1980, which was the first of a number of regimes which pushed America steadily away from tolerance and understanding. Fulwell was instrumental in attacks on pornography, trade unionism, homosexuality and abortion rights. He famously said that AIDS was God's wratch against gay people, and blamed the 9/11 attacks on gays, lesbians and civil liberties campaigners. Strictly News is delighted to see the passing of this disgusting man; we only wish he could have died earlier. If hell exists (and Fulwell certainly believed so), we're certain that's where he now is. |
