Trump Calls Out The WHO
Trump Calls Out The WHO: President Trump escalated conversations with the World Health Organization yesterday. He accused them of being “China Centric” and wrong from the beginning.
According to Trump, the WHO suggested that closing the borders as early as he did was a poor choice. There seems to have been a bi-partisan agreement lately that closing the border early was a good choice, though.
“The World Health [Organization] — very China-centric as I say — basically everything was very positive for China,” Trump told host Sean Hannity. “Don’t close your borders, they strongly recommended … That would’ve been a disaster, that would’ve been a total disaster.
“And literally, they called every shot wrong,” the president added. “They didn’t want to say where [coronavirus] came from. For many years, we’ve been funding the World Health Organization.” – Trump

The W.H.O. really blew it. For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China centric. We will be giving that a good look. Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on. Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 7, 2020
Did the WHO have good reason to suggest not doing a travel ban?
As Trump calls out the WHO, he has stated that there should be some form of investigation and that he may temporarily stop American funding for the World Health Organization while they investigate the response.
Here’s the World Health Organization’s reasoning behind discouraging the travel ban:
“Although travel restrictions may intuitively seem like the right thing to do, this is not something that WHO usually recommends,” said Tarik Jašarević, a WHO spokesperson. “This is because of the social disruption they cause and the intensive use of resources required,” he added.
Experts said travel bans could lead to a slew of downstream effects and risk complicating the public health response.
“There’s not only the financial toll on a country that is dealing with this outbreak, but this can discourage transparency, both in this outbreak and in the future,” Worsnop said.
